Getting Help

If your child is not progressing at the same rate as his/her peers, and is struggling with school work, it is important to talk to the class teacher about it. What observations have been made? What areas is he/she having difficulties with? How can these be addressed? Does the child's case history reflect any possible risk indicators? (eg. speech delay, hearing difficulties).

At this point, schools in Malaysia do not screen for dyslexia and most teachers are not aware of the symptoms and signs. Early screening can take a great deal of stress off from parents and children as specific difficulties can be pin-pointed and addressed.

When meeting the Special Educator for a consultation, it is imperative for parents to take with them as much of the child's work as possible. This will enable him/her to spot any 'red flags' and to determine if there is a possible risk for dyslexia. With the help of the child's parents, a case history is done, so that a holistic approach can be taken during the assessment process.

The tester will then examine the information carefully and if there are are any indications of a risk of dyslexia, a full assessment will be recommended.
