FAQs
1. What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a neurological or brain-based learning disablilty and is characterised by problems in short-term memory, reading, spelling, expressive and/or receptive speech. It can also affect mathematics.
It is NOT the result of low intelligence as many dyslexics have an average IQ.There are some dyslexics with a high IQ (gifted). Dyslexia is a processing difficulty. Research has proved that although there is no cure for dyslexia, with timely identification and effective teaching methods (intervention) dyslexics can be helped tremendously, to cope with their difficulties.
2. How do I know if my child might be dyslexic?
There are red flag or warning signs to look out for. After 4 1/2 years of age, if your child is having difficulties connecting letter sounds to letter symbols, or is having difficulties with rhyming, sequencing letters or a difficulty naming common objects it is worthwhile seeing a Sp.Ed for a consultation to determine if there might be a risk of dyslexia.

3. How long is the assessment?
The assessment is given in 2 parts; part 1 is the consultation which is between parents and the Sp.Educator. As the assessment process takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hrs in total, it is important for the Sp.Educator to determine if there might be a risk of dyslexia, before carrying out the assessment. If the Sp. Educator can see that there might be a risk of dyslexia after examining the child's case history, a full assessment will be recommended. The assessment process (part 2) is done over two days and takes about 1hr 15mins for each day.
4. What happens after the assessment?
After the assessment, the Sp. Educator will meet with parents for a report overview in order to explain the tests and to discuss their child's learning profile.
Research has shown that effective intervention can greatly help dyslexic students to cope with their difficulties. Each child is an individual and one-to-one classes enables the Sp.Educator to give the children their undividided attention. The classes are taught using a multisensory metod of teaching.
