Writing comes from reading

There is much research to support the fact that an exposure to books and reading, helps children with their creative writing. A child who is familiar with the conventions of different text types is much more able to compose their own texts or stories.

One of my favourite children's writers is Eric Carle.  His books are very distinctive and he uses a collage method for the illustrations. But what I love the most is the fact that there is usually a surprise at the end of his books which adds an extra dimension. I won't tell you what; you'll have to read one to see! A good start would be 'The very lonely firefly.'

Carle says: “With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates—will they be friendly?'

His books are available in most major book stores.
